Excess gum tissue can proliferate and cover the surface of teeth. This can make the gum line uneven, make teeth appear to be disproportionately smaller and make it more difficult to keep teeth clean. Growth of excess gum tissue can be caused by bone that extends too close to the surface of the teeth, as an inflammatory response to gum disease, during orthodontic care if the gums have not been kept sufficiently clean and as a side effect of medications.
A gingivectomy can restore the health and esthetics of gums. Dr. Hunt would take away the excess gums, remove any bacteria or build up that had accumulated because it was difficult to clean around the bulky gums tissue and then contour the gums to be esthetically pleasing.
