After the first stage of non-surgical treatment is completed, the disease process may be arrested and stabilized but it is not cured. It is vitally important that you "maintain" your gum tissue so that it stays in this healthy state. You will need to have a periodontal maintenance cleaning on a regular basis for as long as you want to keep your teeth. Research shows that a majority of periodontal patients could benefit from quarterly cleanings. Those with less involvement or those in the early stages of periodontal disease can maintain healthy gums with cleanings every 4 months. Others with poor oral hygiene or those with health problems (i.e. smokers or diabetics etc.) may need to have cleanings every 2 months in order to keep gums healthy and prevent the disease from progressing. Dr. Hunt will determine the most appropriate cleaning schedule for your individual situation. Your quarterly periodontal maintenance cleanings can be done alternating with your general dentist. We will keep your general dentist informed of your condition throughout your time with us and work closely with them to help facilitate the most effective treatment program for you.
